Shakeology Ingredients – Are They Healthy?
BeachBody, a company that makes a number of different health products, is also the mind behind Shakeology. If you’ve ever heard of the P90X Workout, BeachBody is also the creator of that. So they have a solid track record of providing quality health products. Even if you know nothing about the P90X Workout, all you have to do is ask any personal trainer you come across, and they’ll tell you the program is solid and has an amazing track record of helping people get in best shape of their lives.
Shakeology, however, is neither a workout program or a weight loss program. It’s not a program at all. Rather, it’s a weight loss product. What this means in practical terms is that you’re going to have to figure out how to fit the shakes into your diet. This means that without knowing nutritional information, you’re unlikely to get the most out of Shakeology shakes. Luckily for you, the ingredients and nutritional facts about the various flavors is quite readily available. All you have to do is keep reading!
The Best Tasting Shake for Weight Loss?
The Shakeology Nutrition Facts
Before you begin doing your research, you need to keep in mind that each flavor has slightly different ingredients. This means you can’t just look at one flavor and be done. However, there are some common, baseline ingredients that you’ll find no matter what flavor you use and give you a good idea of the nutrition that is packed into this awesome shake.
The first thing you can expect to find no matter what flavor you get is a massive amount of vitamins and nutrients. Shakeology shakes use multiple essential vitamins, as well as superfoods like wheat grass. This allows it to be a replacement for a daily multi-vitamin, if you wanted it to be.
Each flavor has around 150 – 200 calories, but each also has a slightly different number of calories, which we’ll get into in a bit. You can also expect anywhere from 15 to 20 grams of protein, 1 to 10 grams of carbohydrates and sugars, and about 5 grams of fiber. Again, each flavor will be slightly different.
The ingredient mix will also help boost up your energy as well as keep your appetite suppressed. This makes them fairly good as meal replacement shakes, though keep in mind that liquids process more quickly than solids.
Each flavor, as mentioned, has a slightly different list of ingredients. This means it has a slightly different list of nutritional facts. We’ll start with Cafe Latte. This shake boasts 150 calories on the dot, with a mere 15 calories from fat. The most notable vitamins in the flavor are Vitamin A, with 100% of your daily value (based, as always, on a 2000 calorie a day diet), Vitamin C at 300%, and then Thiamine, Vitamin B12, and Manganese at 100% each.
Chocolate, which is their most popular flavor, has 160 calories. Of those, 20 are from fats. The notable vitamins and minerals are the same as Cafe Latte, with the exception of Vitamin B6 which is also at 100%. Vanilla, another best selling flavor, is a mere 130 calories. 15 of those are still from fat, however. It contains the same vitamins and minerals as the chocolate flavor shakes contain.
The strawberry flavor shake has the exact same nutritional statistics as the vanilla flavor. So you can expect the same nutritional value. Greenberry is a flavor that’s curious only in the question of what flavor “greenberry” actually is. It’s nutritional values can be matched up to vanilla and strawberry. As for the actual flavor, it’s a mixture of green tea, goji berry, and bilberry. It’s also got a bit of cherry in there. So it’s quite an interesting flavor!
Vegan Chocolate and Vegan Tropical Strawberry are the flavors where things change up a bit. Because of the vegan nature of these shakes, they don’t contain quite the same spread of vitamins and nutrients. They’re both comparable to each other in nutritional value, but each have a few subtle differences. For example, while they both have 170 calories, the Vegan Chocolate has 35 calories from fat, where as the Vegan Tropical Strawberry has only 30. In addition, the Vegan Chocolate flavor contains a full 4 grams of saturated fats, while there’s .5 fewer grams in the Vegan Tropical Strawberry. While that may not seem like a big difference, it could make a big difference when added up with the rest of your diet plan! The Vegan Chocolate also has 50mg more sodium, boasting 300mg to a lower 250mg in the Vegan Tropical Strawberry. However, when looking at percentage of daily value, this is only a 3% difference, making it 13% instead of 10%.
Both flavors also have a much lower amount of both Vitamin A and Vitamin C, containing 2% and 33% respectively. This is due to the vegan nature of the two flavors. Without the ability to use meat byproducts, it’s a bit more difficult to get certain vitamins and minerals. Not impossible, of course, and no doubt anyone interested in the vegan flavors is already capable of finding the necessary vitamins to be healthy.
Are There Any Downsides?
If you’re looking for a perfect product, you’re going to be incredibly disappointed for most of your life. There is no perfect product, and that includes Shakeology shakes. Shakeology shakes may offer a huge variety, but that variety comes at a cost. You should expect to pay about $130 for 30 servings of shakes. This is one shake a day, and it’s not cheap. This is especially true if you’re trying to save money. So if you’re looking for something inexpensive, this isn’t where you should look.
That said, even though you can find cheaper shakes, you’re unlikely to find many that have as much solid evidence for doing what they claim. Shakeology has been tested multiple times. Each time, it’s been proven that they work exactly as promised, provided they’re used as directed.
Does It Work?
Of course, with any diet product there’s really only one major question. That being, does the product actually work? After all, while $130 a month may feel like a lot in a vacuum, it may be a perfectly fine reasonable amount to lose weight. Even unwanted flavors can taste great if you’re watching the fat melt off!
So the answer, then, is yes. Shakeology shakes can and will work exactly as they promise. As long as you use them as directed, that is. There is no magic weight loss wand, after all. You have to use them as a tool. When you use the tool properly, then you reap the benefits. This is just as true of Shakeology shakes.
